The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Air Service) John Frost, United States Army Air Service, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 103d Aero Squadron, 3d Pursuit Group, U.S. Army Air Service, A.E.F., near Verneville, France, 17 September 1918. While on patrol duty with two other planes in enemy territory Lieutenant Frost attacked an enemy formation of eight planes (Fokker type). He attacked at close range and, after a severe combat, succeeded in sending one of the enemy down in flames. With his comrades, they destroyed in all four planes and by repeated attacks dispersed the remainder.
