The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant Charles Emile Daune, Army of France, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 8th Regiment, Mounted Chasseurs, Army of France, near St. Mihiel, France, 12 September 1918. When the advance of his battalion was held up by a hostile strong point, well fortified and protected by barbed-wire entanglements, Lieutenant Daune, at the head of his platoon, led his men forward, forcing an opening through the wire, and overcame the enemy’s resistance, capturing 158 prisoners, including two officers and 15 machine guns.
