The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain Oliver Chevalier, Army of France, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 71st Regiment of Infantry, 42d Division, A.E.F. (Attached), near Champagne, France, July 15 – 16 and near the Ourcq River, France, July 28 to 2 August 1918. Captain Chevalier displayed extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry in making daily reconnaissances of the front lines, under unusually heavy machine-gun and artillery fire, rendering valuable aid to the division to which he was attached.
