    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain Bertrand, Army of France, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 308th Company, 3d Battalion of Light Tanks, Assault Artillery, Army of France, near Blanc Mont Ridge, France. 3 October 1918. While attached to the Second American Division Captain Bertrand led his company of tanks into the fight under terrific shell and machine-gun fire. He set an example of coolness and bravery to all about him, being conspicuous for his devotion to duty, in the performance of which he was killed by the enemy fire.
