Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Bateman distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving as a Corpsman attached to the Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Vierzy, France, 19 July 1918. Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Bateman aided the wounded under heavy shell fire. He took charge of two German prisoners and assisted the wounded to the rear continually returning for more and being always under hyeavy fire. He showed greeat bravery by continually exposing himself.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Charles W. Bateman, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving as a Corpsman attached to the Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Thiaucourt France, September 12 -15, 1918. Rendering first aid under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire Pharmacist’s Mate Bateman showed utter disregard for his own personal safety, venturing through shelled areas to the assistance of the wounded. He obtained most valuable information for the guidance of stretcher bearers.

Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Bateman rendered first aid to the wounded under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire without regard for his own personal safety. He repeatedly gave first aid in heavily shelled areas when no other help could be given to the wounded and, at one time, ran through an intense barrage fire to obtain and guide stretcher bearers.
