The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Marcel Barre, Army of France, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 308th Company, 3d Battalion of Light Tanks, Assault Artillery, near Massif Blanc Mont, France October 3 – 8, 1918. During attacks by the Second American Division, Gunner Barre distinguished himself by coolness and courage in leading his tank in the approach march through heavy counter-preparation fire. He brought his tank into position with great skill and later displayed extraordinary personal heroism in going under heavy shell fire to the rescue of American wounded.
