(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) Chester John Hirschfelder, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action during World War II. During an attack, when his tanks were stopped by artillery fire, he walked up to the lead tank, beat on the turret and urged the men to advance. Under his leadership the advance was resumed.Colonel Hirschfelder’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
