The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harold Napoleon Gilbert (ASN: 0-7596), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mezy, France, 10 July 1918. With utter disregard for his own safety, exposed to heavy enemy machine gun and rifle fire, Lieutenant Gilbert crossed open ground under enemy observation and less than 75 yards from the enemy line and rendered first aid to wounded members of his platoon, thus saving their lives and setting an example of bravery and devotion to duty to other members of his command.
