Gustaf Braun joined the New York National Guard in 1910 and served on the Mexican border during the Villa Expedition. He was commissioned in 1917, and received the Distinguished Service Cross while serving with the 47th Infantry Regiment in World War I. He received a second Distinguished Service Cross in World War II while serving with the 34th Infantry Division, and was promoted to Brigadier General and served as Assistant Commanding General of the Division until he was Killed in Action.
