The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Major (Infantry) Alexander E. Anderson, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 165th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Bois Colas near Sergines-et-Nesles, France, 29 July 1918. During a counterattack by the enemy, Major Anderson, with great courage and disregard for his own safety, gathered together a small number of men and with them rushed to the support of a thinly held line. Exposing himself to concentrated machine-gun fire, he exhorted his men to stand fast, his example of courage and contempt for the heavy enemy fire greatly encouraging the men engaged and resulting in the complete repulse of the enemy forces.
