The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Medical Corps) Conrad Wesselhoeft, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 102d Infantry Regiment (Attached), 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Verdun, France, 8 November 1918. Captain Wesselhoeft went forward, under heavy machine-gun fire, to the aid of a wounded soldier. The fire was so heavy that they were compelled to remain in the shell hole until nightfall, when he brought the wounded man to our lines.
