The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Abe Short (ASN: 551605), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company H, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Romagne, France, 8 October 1918. Sergeant Short courageously led his platoon through a terrific barrage and silenced a machine-gun position which was enfilading the attacking line. This soldier was killed later in this action.
