The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant Albert Schad (ASN: 1245668), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 111th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near La Chene Tondu, France, 4 October 1918. Sergeant Schad on his own initiative, took forward a platoon to fill a gap left in the attacking platoons on account of casualties. Leaving his platoon to cover the road, he advanced alone upon a machine-gun nest, killed the entire crew with hand grenades, and captured the gun. He then held the position until the advance was taken up the following morning.
