The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Harry L. Kimmell, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, north of Fleville, France, 9 October 1918. Captain Kimmell personally led two platoons of his company against a strongly held enemy position. He fell mortally wounded while leading this advance, but other members of his command, inspired by his gallantry, successfully assaulted the enemy position.
