The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Service Cross to Major (Medical Corps) Charles W. Comfort, Jr., United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 102d Infantry Regiment (Attached), 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Marcheville, France, 26 September 1918. Major comfort displayed the highest courage and devotion to duty being continually present on the front line administering first-aid to the wounded under violent artillery and machine-gun fire.
