English, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 344th Tank Battalion, Tank Corps, American Expeditionary Forces, near Exermont, France, 4 October 1918. Captain English left his tank under heavy machine-gun and artillery fire to make a personal reconnaissance, in the course of which he was killed.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Armor) Matthew Lewis English, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 344th Tank Battalion, Tank Corps, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cheppy, France, 26 September 1918. During the attack on Cheppy, Captain English dismounted from his tank and, under heavy machine-gun fire, personally supervised the cutting of a passage for his tanks through three hostile trenches.
