The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Armor) Math L. English, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 344th Tank Battalion, Tank Corps, American Expeditionary Forces, near Exermont, France, 4 October 1918. Captain English left his tank under heavy machine-gun and artillery fire to make a personal reconnaissance, in the course of which he was killed.
