The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Rudolph Alfred Zimmerman (ASN: 2178114), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Machine-Gun Company, 354th Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Remonville, France, November 2 – 3, 1918. Severely wounded in the cheek by a machine-gun bullet, Sergeant Zimmerman refused to be evacuated, but continued to lead his machine-gun section with the assault wave, displaying remarkable bravery and leadership, until his company was relieved next morning.
