Zimmer (ASN: 543075), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company L, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 July 1918, near Fossoy, France, Private Zimmer carried messages continuously from the Battalion Post of Command to the Regimental Post of Command through intense shell fire, made repeated trips without rest until wounded while carrying a message, though in great pain, he delivered the message before receiving medical attention. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private John Henry Zimmer (ASN: 543075), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fossoy, France, 15 July 1918. Acting as runner, Private Zimmer made repeated trips through the heavy enemy bombardment of 15 July and, after being wounded on a mission, he accomplished his task before receiving medical attention.
