The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Stephen Zappa (ASN: 1386984), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 131st Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Chipilly Ridge, France, August 10 – 19, 1918. Private First Class Zappa volunteered for dangerous missions, carrying messages over areas swept by heavy machine-gun and shell fire. He displayed great courage in accomplishing each task.
