    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Edmund Loughborough Zane, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Etienne, France, October 3 – 9, 1918. With remarkable courage and daring, Colonel Zane led his battalion through heavy machine-gun and shell fire to its objective. On several other occasions he voluntarily visited the front, under most hazardous conditions, thereby acquainting his regimental commander with exceptionally important data.
