The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Raleigh L. Younger, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mezy, France, 15 July 1918. After being wounded in both hands Lieutenant Younger took a rifle and killed an enemy machine-gunner; and, disregarding his wounds, remained with his platoon until it had taken up a new position several hours later.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Raleigh L. Younger, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 July 1918 during the Battle of the Marne, after having been wounded in both hands, Lieutenant Younger took a rifle from one of his men and killed an enemy machine gun operator, and in spite of his wounds, remained with his platoon until it had been put in position on a new line several hours later, near Mezy, France.
