The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Louis Yaeger (ASN: 2253657), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 321st Machine-Gun Battalion, 82d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Pont-a-Mousson, France, 12 September 1918. Private Yaeger, with his brother, Corporal Roy Yaeger, remained at an advanced position in the face of heavy machine-gun and rifle fire from the enemy and, by effective use of their machine-gun and pistols, covered the withdrawal of the infantry, inflicting serious losses on the enemy and refusing to retire until they were ordered to do so.
