The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Godfrey Neil Wyke, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 111th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Fismes and Fismette, France, 10 August – 12, 1918. For three days Lieutenant Wyke voluntarily acted as runner after three of the five runners of his company had been killed and two had been wounded. He made numerous trips by day and night through exposed areas under fire, and thus successfully maintained liaison.
