The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant John W. Wright (ASN: 2339546), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Nesles, France, 15 July 1918. After he had been severely wounded, Sergeant Wright remained on duty through a heavy shell and gas bombardment, rendering valuable assistance to his platoon commander.
