The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Richard Fuller Woodward, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, 9 October 1918. Disregarding his intense suffering from wounds, Lieutenant Woodward continued to lead and encourage his men until killed by another rain of machine-gun bullets.
