The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Alton Palmer Wood, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 167th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the vicinity of Ancerviller, France, May 3 – 4, 1918. While on patrol in “No Man’s Land” on the night of May 3-4, 1918, Second Lieutenant Wood displayed great courage and devotion to duty in continuing to direct his men after having been mortally wounded, and refusing aid until he was assured of the safety of his men.
