The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Walter Scott Witt (ASN: 2176194), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 353d Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in Bois-de-Bantheville, France, 22 October 1918. Although wounded in the face by machine-gun fire, Sergeant Witt refused to go to the first-aid station for treatment, remaining with his platoon throughout the engagement, until the objective was reached and the position consolidated.
