    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Dudley Mortimor Winthrop (ASN: 90934), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company H, 165th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Sector Auberive, France, 16 July 1918. After repeated attempts to rescue a wounded soldier in a communication trench held by the enemy had failed, Sergeant Winthrop went out in the, face of heavy machine-gun fire, rescued the wounded man and dressed his wounds.
