The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Walter H. Wiechmann, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 103d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Marcheville, France, 26 September 1918. Corporal Wiechmann climbed out from the top of a trench, under machine-gun fire from all directions, to take prisoners in another trench who had thrown up their hands and shouted that they had surrendered. Approaching, he was met with a shower of hand grenades, but he nevertheless stood his ground and opened fire.
