The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Ralph Lodger Whitney (ASN: 2036685), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 112th Machine-Gun Battalion, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Montagne, France, 15 October 1918. During an attack, Private Whitney was tireless in his efforts to bring food and water to his comrades. On October 8 he captured 13 Germans without assistance and without regard to his personal safety. Later, while aiding a wounded comrade he was severely wounded.
