By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Wellmon P. Whaley (ASN: 2338817), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company F, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 22 July 1918, being far in advance of a patrol crossing a wheat field near Mont St. Pere, Sergeant Whaley came in contact with an enemy patrol which opened fire on him. After being wounded, disregarding all danger of rifle and machine gun fire, he remained at his post killing one of the enemy and dispersing others. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Wellmon Peter Whaley (ASN: 2338817), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mont St. Pere, France, 22 July 1918. Advancing far ahead of his patrol, Sergeant Whaley encountered an enemy patrol, which opened fire on him. Despite the fact that he had been severely wounded, he continued to combat the enemy, killing one and dispersing the others.
