The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant George B. Webber (ASN: 1391383), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Machine-Gun Company, 132d Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Brieulles, France, 8 October 1918. When it appeared evident that his forces would give way under the pressure of the unusual enemy fire, Sergeant Webber jumped forward, and taking command of a machine-gun crew, led them into the front line, where he remained for two days. He refused evacuation while suffering from a severe gassing, until he finally collapsed under the strain.
