The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James B. McConnell, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Les Franquettes Farm, France, 23 July 1918. First Lieutenant McConnell continued in command of his platoon after having part of his face shot away by a machine-gun bullet. He later died of his wound.
