The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private John M. Ward (ASN: 3668773), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 314th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 79th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Falbas, France, 10 November 1918. Under heavy machine-gun and artillery fire, Private Ward waded through a swamp, administered first aid to a wounded soldier, and then carried the latter to safety.
