The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Herman Wallenmaier (ASN: 42580), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near the Argonne Forest, France, 9 October 1918. Although suffering painfully from wounds, Private Wallenmaier remained with his company during the entire action, and then was evacuated only when ordered to leave by his commanding officers, being unable to proceed farther because of the loss of blood.
