The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant William R. Wallace (ASN: 1236515), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Baslieux, Marne, France, 6 September 1918. Although twice wounded by enemy machine-gun bullets, Sergeant Wallace continued to lead his platoon forward through artillery and machine-gun fire. In the hand-to-hand conflict which followed, eleven of the enemy were killed or wounded. His devotion to duty was an excellent example to his command.
