The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Hubbard J. Walker (ASN: 1307335), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ypres, Belgium, 24 July 1918. Private First Class Walker was on duty at a detached automatic-rifle post heavily shelled by the enemy. Two soldiers were killed and three, including himself, seriously wounded. Though this was his first experience under fire, he displayed unhesitating devotion by remaining at his post while, because of his wound, he could use but one hand in handling his rifle.
