The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Howard E. Waite (ASN: 180832), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Sanitary Detachment, 126th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Juvigny, France, 31 August 1918. Facing heavy enemy machine-gun fire, Private First Class Waite volunteered to go out and administer first aid to wounded soldiers lying on an open field, saving the lives of five men and alleviating the suffering of many others. After dark he continued his work until all the wounded had been removed to the rear and their wounds dressed.
