The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James Attmore Vincent, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 363d Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Eclisfontaine, France, 27 September 1918. Returning to the company after being treated for a very severe wound in the neck, First Lieutenant Vincent commanded his platoon, which had been ordered to fall back because of a violent barrage. He volunteered and went forward to the aid of two enlisted men of his platoon who had been seriously wounded. While performing this duty he was again wounded in the knee, but worked his way back to the dressing station, and from there walked a distance of four kilometers to the field hospital.
