The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Edward T. Vibbert (ASN: 242283), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 125th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Sergy, northeast of Chateau-Thierry, France, 31 July 1918. When his company was obliged to dig in under heavy fire from all arms within 150 yards of the main German line, he was sent with a message from the company commander to the chief of a front-line platoon. In endeavoring to accomplish his mission this soldier was mortally wounded. Lying on the ground he yelled “Message,” attracted the attention of the platoon leader, and with his dying breath delivered the message he bore.
