The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Bernard Van’t Hof, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 168th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, northeast of Chateau-Thierry, France, 28 July 1918. First Lieutenant Van’t Hof directed his platoon so skillfully in attack near Sergy and conducted himself with such bravery and fearlessness that his men captured six machine-guns from the Prussian Guards and took 25 prisoners, which guns were then used with effect in driving the enemy from their positions.
