    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Coleman Hargrove Van De Graff, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 15th Field Artillery, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Villemontoire, France, 21 July 1918. On duty with the infantry as liaison officer, Lieutenant Van De Graff displayed marked courage in passing through an enemy artillery barrage several times, in carrying information to his battalion commander and administering aid to wounded men under heavy shell fire.
