The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Thomas A. Upton (ASN: 71276), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Belleau, France, 20 July 1918. Corporal Upton voluntarily crossed a zone swept by machine-gun and shell fire to aid wounded soldiers and was killed.
