The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Joseph Wofford Turner (ASN: 1310695), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 118th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Vaux Andigny, France, 11 October 1918. Sergeant Turner volunteered and carried an automatic rifle to an advantageous position far in advance of his own line, and maintained an effective fire on the enemy until his gun was put out of action and he was wounded in both hands and forced to retire.
