The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Henry David Turner (ASN: 2101130), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 10th Machine-Gun Battalion, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Le Vallee, France, 23 July 1918; near St. Thibault, France, 9 August 1918; near the Bois-de-Septsarges, France, 29 September 1918, and near the Bois-de-Fays, France, 6 October 1918. Sergeant Turner, a runner, repeatedly went out under shell and machine-gun fire to maintain liaison between units, frequently volunteering for especially hazardous missions. After other runners had been killed, he rendered valuable service by repeatedly crossing dangerous areas in order to maintain communications.
