The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Ralph T. Trew (ASN: 1519517), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Hearne, Belgium, 4 October 1918. Volunteering to construct a footbridge across the Scheldt River, Sergeant Trew crossed the stream in plain view of the enemy, under violent machine-gun fire, and, after the bridge had been completed, returned and led the first detachment of his regiment across.
