By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Hugh P. Travers, Jr. (ASN: 2395693), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, early on the morning of 15 July 1918, near Mezy, France, while the Germans were attempting to cross the Marne, Private Travers was wounded by shrapnel but refused to leave his post. Later in the same day he was again wounded but still refused to leave his post and continued fighting until the engagement was over. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]
