The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Norman L. Torrey (ASN: 133716), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery C, 101st Field Artillery, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Verdun, France, October 23 – 27, 1918. Private Torrey acted as runner for the artillery liaison officer and after this officer was returned wounded, voluntarily remained for 24 hours, acting as runner for the infantry and constantly passing through the most intense artillery and machine-gun fire.
