War Department, General Orders No. 56 (1922)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Frederick A. Tieman (ASN: 1211399), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company H, 107th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bony, France, 29 September 1918. During the attack against the Hindenburg line, when he became separated from his squad, with utter disregard for his personal safety Private Tieman fearlessly operated a Lewis machine gun, inflicting heavy losses upon the enemy. Later, when it was possible for him to rejoin his company, he assisted in rallying the men to further efforts and aided materially in the victory that was ultimately won. His splendid courage and gallant conduct were an inspiration to all his comrades.
