The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal John W. Thompson, Jr. (ASN: 1315445), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bellicourt, France, 29 September 1918. With another soldier, Corporal Thompson rushed a hostile machine-gun which was firing on his company, and killed two of the enemy. He then continued to advance close behind the barrage and displayed great bravery in the attack. Shortly before the company’s objective was reached he was severely wounded, and has since died of his wounds.
